Students are expected to read hundreds of pages of text for a variety of classes, each with the assumption that the student is able to synthesize, analyze, and incorporate new learning into the course.\u00a0 The Center for Reading and Writing provides guidance and strategies to help students accomplish these goals in all disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>Our consultants will work one-on-one or in small groups with students helping them to navigate the demands of college level reading. Comprehension and understanding of a text increase when the reader is aware of the strategies that he or she uses, as well as when a discussion is held with peers.\u00a0 Therefore, coming to the Center for a reading session is a great way to enhance and improve academic performance.<\/p>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Correct Assumptions about College Reading<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<ul>\n<li>Reading is an ACTIVE pursuit, not passive.<\/li>\n<li>Texts should be read more than once.<\/li>\n<li>Annotating and\/or note taking while reading are imperative.<\/li>\n<li>Thinking critically about the text means engaging in a conversation with the author, asking questions, and making connections to other readings, theories, and ideas.<\/li>\n<li>Depending upon your purpose, texts should be read at varying rates and depths.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Watch this video to find out five strategies to improve your reading:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fh3Rpp6nd4w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">College Reading in Five<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>The Reading Process<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>Reading is a process that must be considered and executed with care and focus.\u00a0 Understanding of content and nuances of text are not achieved by a single reading.\u00a0 Texts are meant to be read multiple times, employing different strategies which are determined by the stage of reading you are in.\u00a0 The stages are <strong>pre-reading, reading, re-reading, <\/strong>and<strong> post reading<\/strong>.\u00a0 The Center provides support for each of these stages in the reading process.<\/p>\n<p>During each of these stages, the issue of <strong>flexibility<\/strong> and <strong>rate<\/strong> are extremely important.\u00a0 The best readers are flexible and know when and how to vary their rate according to the demands of the text and the expectations of the reader.\u00a0 For example, a chemistry textbook should be read differently than a newspaper article.<\/p>\n<p>Review these two documents for further information regarding flexibility and rate as well as suggestions for how to modify yours while reading.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/crw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/07\/6_reading_myths1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Six Reading Myths<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/crw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/07\/Vary-Your-Reading-Rate.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vary Your Reading Rate<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE STAGES OF READING:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PRE-READING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Previewing:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Before you read, familiarize yourself with the text.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Survey the material to get a feel for the text and to determine ahead of time why you are reading, what you already know about the topic, and how it should be read.<\/li>\n<li>Notice the title and date of publication.<\/li>\n<li>Investigate the introduction and conclusion and any questions that follow.<\/li>\n<li>Define your expectations of the material.<\/li>\n<li>Identify assumptions,\u00a0interests and\u00a0knowledge about the text and author.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Questioning:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Before you read, ask questions about the text.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is your purpose for reading?\u00a0 What do you hope to get out of the text?<\/li>\n<li>Use the journalist&#8217;s questions (who, what, when, where, how and why) to begin a method of inquiry which will continue while you read.<\/li>\n<li>Keep all of these questions in mind and look for the answers while you read.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>READING and RE-READING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reading Actively:<br \/>\n<\/strong>While you read, maintain an active engagement with the text.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Think about the text as you read.<\/li>\n<li>Have an internal dialogue with the author.<\/li>\n<li>Visualize what the writer is saying.<\/li>\n<li>Try to\u00a0uncover the\u00a0central and\u00a0secondary ideas. Ask yourself, what is the writer saying? What does the author want me to know? What am I learning about? How does this relate to my own observations and experiences?<\/li>\n<li>Make connections to other theories and ideas discussed in class.<\/li>\n<li>Try to paraphrase or retell what you are reading.<\/li>\n<li>Distinguish between fact and opinion.<\/li>\n<li>Reread confusing parts; most texts benefit from a second and sometimes third reading.<\/li>\n<li>Continue asking questions as you read.\u00a0 Question the author and his credibility. Write the answers.<\/li>\n<li>Formulate extended questions about the text.<\/li>\n<li>Rehearse what you have learned through self-talk, graphic organizers, peer discussions, and\/or study groups.<\/li>\n<li>Determine what you may not understand and ask your instructor or classmates to clarify information.<\/li>\n<li>Extend your knowledge by visiting websites, locating additional sources, creating study guides, and asking new questions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Reading Strategies<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>Reading well requires using multiple strategies throughout various stages of the reading process.<\/p>\n<p>Take the Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Inventory (MARSI) to assess your strategy use.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/crw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/07\/MARSI.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MARSI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now that you know what strategies you use most often, be aware of how you apply them when you read.\u00a0 Interact with the text by constantly checking your understanding, asking questions of the text and the author, and making connections within the text.<\/p>\n<p>Apply different strategies at different stages and for different purposes.\u00a0 No one strategy fits all reading situations. You may have to complete a reading log, journal entry, response essay, or\u00a0thesis paper, participate in class discussions, reading groups, oral presentations, or you may have an exam. Whatever your responsibility, you should be\u00a0organized and equipped to tackle the task.<\/p>\n<p>The way in which you respond to the texts assigned for class is largely driven by the professor\u2019s intentions.\u00a0 How will the text be used?
