{"id":7,"date":"2012-07-17T07:56:18","date_gmt":"2012-07-17T12:56:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/crw\/become-tutor\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T11:52:01","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T15:52:01","slug":"become-tutor","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/crw\/become-tutor\/","title":{"rendered":"CRW Jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Center for Reading and Writing (CRW) hires <strong>Writing &amp; Reading<\/strong> <strong>Peer Consultants <\/strong>and<strong> Supplemental Instruction Leaders <\/strong>(SIs) annually in the spring and summer for the upcoming academic year. <em>We look for academically and culturally diverse candidates who enjoy helping their peers, and we strive\u00a0to employ students from a wide variety of majors.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Consulting for the CRW is more than a job. It is community service on campus with many challenges and rewards, and with those come some pretty serious responsibilities. \u00a0Not everyone is cut out for this kind of work, and of those who are capable of meeting the demands, there are some who won&#8217;t be comfortable making the sacrifices required.<\/p>\n<p>A common misconception about consulting is that it is primarily a matter of correcting others&#8217; papers, especially for sentence-level errors, and that therefore an encyclopedic knowledge of grammar, punctuation, mechanics, etc. is what consultants really need in order to do their jobs well. \u00a0And that&#8217;s just not true. \u00a0Although it&#8217;s important that consultants be accomplished readers and writers, teaching grammar is not part of the job description. The foremost requirements are, in as nearly equal measure as possible, a proven commitment to learning, a passion for good writing, and a deep desire to help others.<\/p>\n<p>Since, however, those qualities are difficult to measure, we require the following of applicants:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Successful completion of CRWT 102 (or AIID 201, if you placed out of CRWT).<\/li>\n<li>Minimum grade point average of 3.3; or strong evidence of exemplary academic improvement after a GPA-crushing crisis.<\/li>\n<li>Evidence of ability to work both independently and as part of a close-knit group.<\/li>\n<li>Evidence of motivation to help others (not necessarily with reading and\/or writing).<\/li>\n<li>Availability to attend all-day pre-service training during the week before the fall semester begins.<\/li>\n<li>Availability to work at least ten hours per week, and to attend in-service training meetings during the academic year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We ask that you provide the following materials in your application (please note: there is no application form; simply gather and submit the materials below together):<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A one-page cover letter addressing your claims to the requirements above.<\/li>\n<li>An unofficial copy of your current academic transcript.<\/li>\n<li>A resume.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Completed applications may be electronically submitted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/careercenter\/handshake-students\/\">Handshake<\/a>, Ramapo&#8217;s student employment website, at the Writing &amp; Reading Peer Consultants link. Contact Priscilla Tovey, ptovey@ramapo.edu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SIs)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Supplemental Instruction Leader (SI) is a student assistant who works directly with the instructor and students in an assigned CRWT class.\u00a0 The SI attends all class sessions acting as a model student and supporting the instructor as needed.\u00a0 In addition to attending weekly classes, SIs facilitate regular, weekly group study sessions. These sessions are extensions of classwork as well as skills and work deemed necessary by the instructor and SI together.\u00a0 SIs will be trained in specific Supplemental Instruction teaching and learning theories and techniques.\u00a0 SIs and Instructors will have regular planning meetings and additional meetings will be held with the Supplemental Instructor Coordinator throughout the semester.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some of the benefits of working as an SI leader are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Increased leadership skills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Experience facilitating a group<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Improved learning skills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Improved reading, writing, and critical thinking skills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Resume booster<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Closer relationships with faculty and staff<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This position has multiple openings for CRWT 101S and two for 102S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Duties:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Attend training prior to the start of the semester<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Attend all class sessions and review all course content<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plan and conduct weekly SI sessions supplementing course content<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Attend meetings with the course instructor<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maintain SI session attendance logs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Participate in class as a model student, assisting and supporting the instructor as needed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Qualifications:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">at least sophomore status<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">overall GPA of 3.0 or above<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">must have taken and passed CRWT 102 or Studies in the Arts and Humanities with a B or better<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">good interpersonal and communication skills (to be determined by the SI Supervisor)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Salary:\u00a0 $15.92\/hour<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Questions?
