鈥淏efore her death Evelyn Aronow worked tirelessly on behalf of disabled persons in the State of New Jersey and beyond,鈥� says Lisa Cohan Aronow. In 1973 Evelyn鈥檚 article, 鈥淔orces In Motion,鈥� was published by the National Easter Seal Society for Crippled Children and Adults. Evelyn suffered from severe cerebral palsy and worked for the State of New Jersey in the Department of Community Affairs. The Department created an award in her memory, The Evelyn Aronow Citizens Award for Advocacy and Promotion of Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities. The award is given to an individual who 鈥渢hrough legislation, education, public relations, technical support or financial support, has promoted growth and development and has made a lasting contribution to community recreation services for individuals with disabilities in New Jersey.鈥�

Evelyn鈥檚 mother, Jeannette B. Aronow was a beloved teacher for 24 years and a long time resident of Springfield, N.J. and Whippany, N.J. At her death in 2010, Jeannette created this endowed scholarship fund for 鈥渁 student who has shown potential to be an advocate for the disabled,鈥� in honor of Evelyn鈥檚 advocacy and support of people with disabilities. Jeannette鈥檚 nephew, Martin, and his wife Lisa partnered with Ramapo to establish the Aronow Scholarship. Sadly, Martin died in June, 2014. Lisa and Martin’s son, Craig, continue to award the scholarship to individual who best represent Evelyn’s vision.

This scholarship also helps to fund a non-paid internship at a not-for-profit organization.
